There’s no better way to experience wild places than to put your boots on and your feet on the ground, one in front of the other. South Africa has a huge variety of awesomely scenic hiking trails. Kukummi Safaris offers a selection along the spectacular coastline and in the mountains. We offer both back packing and ‘slack packing’ trails; the luxury alternative where you don’t have to carry heavy backpacks and sleep in lovely guesthouses enjoying wonderful home cooked meals!

Oystercatcher Trail

Walk along the sea shore and the unspoilt golden beaches of the Western Garden Route.

Discover ancient stone age caves, dolphins, whales, remote dunes, rare plants, Oystercatchers and other birds, seals and marine rich rocky pools. Swim in small safe bays. Marvel at starry nights, enjoy sunshine days on one of these fully guided, 4 day hiking trails from Mossel Bay to Gourits River. Accommodation options are in luxury Cape cottages or rustic character accommodation.

We offer two unique coastal hiking experiences in the Garden Route area of the Cape Province of South Africa:

1. The OYSTERCATCHER TRAIL is a guided, luxury and fully catered slack packing trail where your every comfort is looked after. You only have to carry a small day pack. The rest is supplied. Your luggage is shuttled. The meals at night are never forgotten.

2. The HUNTER GATHERERS Hiking Trail is a “back to basics” experience where we will take you along this beautiful coast line and explore the ways, habits and legacies of the ancient beach wanderers from the later stone age wanderers to the Khoi San clans.

Wild Coast Hotel-hopping Trail

This hike can be walked by anyone who enjoys rambling. The full 6-day trail starts from Qora Mouth (Kob Inn) in the north and ends at Cintsa, but shorter sections can be hiked. The trail traverses some of the most unspoilt and picturesque sections of South Africa’s coastline with overnight accommodation in friendly family hotels. All meals are provided for, whilst a porter service for your luggage can also be arranged.

The full trail is 86 km long, which would normally require 5 days to complete. The trail is not marked in the Transkei section and a guide is required. It is important that you time your day’s walk to coincide with the tides so that you walk on the hard sand with a receding tide and reach the river mouths at low tide to make the crossing easier. Your guide will assist you with this and show you the best place to cross over.

Distances and features of each day’s hiking are :

Leg 1: Mazeppa Bay to Wavecrest   21 km  – the longest stretch but easy walking along sandy beaches.
Leg 2: Wavecrest to Seagulls/Trennery  14km  – rocky headlands, ship wrecks and river crossings.
Leg 3: Seagulls to Morgan Bay 12km  – crossing the Kei river and a walk through coastal forest.
Leg 4: Morgan Bay to Haga Haga  16 km  – spectacular cliffs and shelly beaches.
Leg 5: Haga Haga to Cintsa  17km  – a rocky wavecut platform and a long beach walk
Leg 6: departure
